If you can't work because of an injury or health problem, you could be eligible for disability benefits through Social Security. Yet very few people win benefits without legal help. The experienced disability attorneys of JP Law PC can greatly improve your chances. Our SSD lawyers have successfully represented people in Portland, Vancouver, Beaverton, and throughout Oregon, Washington, and the entire Pacific Northwest and Northern and Bay Area California. We have also assisted clients throughout the continental US and including Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
The Social Security Administration oversees two programs for disabled individuals:
Social Security Disability Insurance, also known as SSDI or SSDI, is for people who worked and paid taxes into the Social Security system before they became disabled. Social Security Disability benefits are awarded regardless of assets or family income. The monthly check is based on how much you paid into the system (up to a maximum).
Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a needs-based program available to any disabled person, regardless of work history. SSI is a safety net for people who, because of their disabilities, have never worked or didn't work enough years to get SSD benefits. The fixed monthly payment helps cover basic living costs. To qualify, your family assets and income cannot be over a certain limit.
The definition of disability is the same for both SSD and SSI, and the claims process is pretty much the same. The main difference is (a) higher benefits under SSD and (b) the limit on assets/incomes for SSI.
Our skilled and caring attorneys represent both SSD and SSI claimants. We have helped clients obtain benefits for physical impairments and for mental disorders at all levels of hearings and appeals. We also help to secure Social Security widow, child, and survivor benefits for family members of disabled individuals.
