Where to File for SSD in My State
July 20, 2021
JP Law PC is based in the Portland, Oregon, area and serves clients in the U.S. Court of Appeals 9th Circuit states. Below you will find information about how to apply for Social Security Disability in the states we serve. Because states differ in handling SSD claims, it is crucial to get information for your state agency or discuss your application with a qualified lawyer who practices in your state.
In Every State, Three Ways To Apply For Benefits
While states differ in how they handle SSD claims, the initial application process is the same from state to state. You can file your application for benefits in one of three ways:
Online applications are available for SSD, but not SSI.
By phone — Call 1-800-772-1213 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you can call TTY 1-800-325-0778.
At your local Social Security office. Follow the link to an online tool that will help you find the office nearest to you. It is important to call first to make an appointment.
For those who are comfortable with computers and the Internet, online filing offers several advantages. You do not need to wait for an interview appointment at your local SSA office — instead, you can start your claim immediately from the comfort of your home. You can also save and return to your application anytime you like, and check the status of your completed application.
On the other hand, if you apply at your local office your interviewer can provide basic assistance completing the paperwork, ask you questions to verify points that aren't clear, and answer any questions you might have. Whichever application method you choose, it is important to file your application as soon as possible: Your benefits will be backdated to the date of application, not to the date of your injury or diagnosis.
